Derek Sivers《How to start a movement》(如何发起一场运动),2分52秒。

Every Tuesday, Lin practices a short English conversation during lunch. For the first week, she sits alone with two question cards. Starting something on your own can feel awkward. She wonders whether anyone else would enjoy a few minutes of speaking practice.

The next Tuesday, her colleague Dan asks to join in. He reads one question and gives a short answer. Then he listens to Lin. They take turns, and neither person needs to prepare a speech. Their simple example makes the activity easier for others to understand.

A week later, two more colleagues come over. Lin and Dan make room for them at the table. They explain the rules and let each newcomer choose a question. A quiet colleague prefers to listen first. The group welcomes that choice and leaves her time to feel comfortable.

By the end of the month, the group has a small routine. Lin still brings the cards, but Dan welcomes new people and others suggest topics. They keep going because the activity is clear and friendly. The person who joins early can help turn a private idea into a shared practice.

  1. on your own /ɑːn jər oʊn/:
You can practice this sentence on your own.
    your 可轻读 /jər/,重点落在 OWN;your‿own 顺接。
  2. join in /dʒɔɪn ɪn/:
Would you like to join in?
  3. take turns /teɪk tɜːrnz/:轮流
We take turns choosing the music.
  4. make room for /meɪk ruːm fər/:
Please make room for one more chair.
  5. keep going /kiːp ˈɡoʊɪŋ/:
We were tired, but we kept going.

“have the courage to follow and show others how to follow.”

courage /ˈkɜːrɪdʒ/ 重读第一个音节;两处 to 可以轻读 /tə/,把重点放在 COURAGE、SHOW 和 FOLLOW。

You can JOIN IN / and we can take TURNS.

We make ROOM for new people / and help each other KEEP GOING.

How did Dan help Lin’s English group grow, and how did they welcome newcomers?

At the beginning, Lin… / Dan helped by… / Together, they…

尽量用上 join in 和 take turns。
